Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has axed the plans to introduce energy efficiency targets for landlords in England and Wales, to be met by April 2025.

Landlords in England and Wales were expected to meet energy efficiency goals set by the government by April 2025. An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which details a home's energy efficiency, is legally required for every house that is sold or rented. The efficiency of your home can be increased by installing insulation. The EPC rating ranges from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Less than half of private rental homes in England last year had an A to C rating for energy efficiency, according to data.

Giving "welcome" savings to landlords, which the previous uncertainty had led to landlords not investing in rental properties as much. Hopefully increasing the number of properties on the market for such a demanding market.

However, this move has sparked some criticism, with some claiming that while it means landlords will not have to spend money to meet this target, it may force renters to pay to heat poorly insulated properties.

Jess Ralston, Energy, and Climate Intelligence Unit - The National Housing Federation, which represents housing associations in England, warned that scrapping targets “could lead to people facing higher bills for years to come”.
