Stockton began as a busy port that was used for exporting wool and wine across the country. In the late 17th century Stockton on Tees began to flourish as the ship-building industry was booming.

Stockton had a market that spread around fifty yards, with townhouses lining the sides of it. This market was held every Wednesday and still is to this day. This market was large and remained immensely popular up until the late eighties.

In 1825, Stockton to Darlington railway opened with the first locomotive traveling to Darlington and back. 40,000 people went to experience the opening of the Railway. ‘Locomotion One’ was not only used for transporting coal and flour but also for passengers. Locomotive one was the first steam-powered passenger railway, as it had a carriage for passengers called Experiment.

In 1825, the Preston Hall was built within Preston Park, by David Burton Fowler. It was not until 1953, that Preston Hall was officially opened for the first time as a public museum.

Tees Barrage opened in 1995, it took 4 years for them to construct and used around 650 tonnes of steel. It was created to clear up the previous pollution in the water from chemical, industrial and domestic waste. Tees Barrage now protects the River Tees from pollution as well as flooding, and the effects of tidal change.
